Right to Information (RTI) activists have demanded abolition of chief minister’s powers to denotify land in the aftermath of allegations of such authority being misused by ministers.

Demanding this, president of Bhrashtachara Virodhi Ranga (BVR) and former speaker of legislative assembly, Krishna, said that over Rs10,000 crore had been looted due to the misuse of this power from the tenure of SM Krishna as chief minister in 1999 till date. BVR is an organisation that works in the field of Right to Information and fights against corruption.

The organisation further demanded that the state government form a committee, comprising judges, opposition and ruling party leaders, to monitor the process of land denotification.

“The process of denotification should be transparent. Denotification should be done only if the committee finds the reasons strong enough. The reasons should be complemented with facts,” said BVR member Jayashree JN.

The organisation said that though the power to denotify was given to the chief minister to help people whose land had been illegally acquired, some Bangalore Development Authority members and ministers were using it for personal benefit. They acquire the land in the name of development and later convert the land into their names, said Krishna.

The BVR also demanded the state government that take immediate action based on the Lok Ayukta’s second mining report. It criticised the government for seeking explanation on the Lokayukta report.

“The government wants to ensure that the politicians and government officials mentioned in the Lok Ayukta report remain unscathed by looking at various reasons to put the report in the dustbin,” said Jayashree.

The BVR has also demanded the resignation of home minister R Ashoka as an FIR has been filed against him in land denotification case.

The BVR plans to meet CM DV Sadananda Gowda on November 2 to put forward its various demands before the government. If the demands are not met, we are going to stage a huge protest, said the BVR.
