In a landmark decision, the state cabinet on Monday decided to provide 50% reservation to women in all urban local bodies, including BBMP.

Announcing the decision after the cabinet meeting, law and parliamentary affairs minister S Suresh Kumar said the provision would be made after bringing amendment to Karnataka Municipal Corporations Act, 1976.

“Fifty per cent reservation has been already provided for women in zilla panchayat, taluk panchayats and grama panchayats.

Likewise, the government has now decided to extend this reservation policy to urban civic agencies also. Hence, BBMP and city corporations and municipalities of all the cities will have this reservation pattern,” he said.

Considering the hazards involved in use of lifts, which are used in all multi-storeyed buildings, the state government is enacting a new law to ensure safety of the lift users.

Suresh Kumar said Karnataka Lift Act was enacted in 1974 and since then no amendment was made. There are serious violations of the rule, he observed.

“After the tragedies such as Carlton Towers, I want to ensure safety in multi-storeyed buildings. It has been decided to give permission only to registered companies to install lifts in buildings. They will be held responsible for annual maintenance, supervision and repairing,” he said.

He added that steps were being taken on the guidelines framed by the central government.

Further, there is good news for the owners of the houses being constructed by Karnataka Housing Board (KHB) in Singanayakanahalli, Hunasamaranahalli, Kodati and Talakuppe of Bangalore Urban district. The government has sanctioned about Rs12 crore for the development of new layouts. The cabinet also passed the proposal to allot houses constructed by the KHB to the present residents under ‘My house-my property’ scheme.

Suresh Kumar explained that KHB had built 23 lakh houses and people still owe KHB a whopping Rs1,500 crore. The government will give one last chance to the original owners to pay the due amount and the houses will be allotted to the present residents.

‘’In most of the cases, the original owners have given away houses to others,’’ he added.

It was also decided to take up the development of 21-km-long Hosakote and Malur (located in Kolar district) Road.

Devraj Urs Truck Terminal will be established at Dharwad and the government has decided to give 56.13 acres of land at half the market price. The state cabinet also gave nod to establish 100-bed hospitals at Hanagal in Haveri district and Mudhol in Bagalkot district.

Further, the state government decided to give preference to students who study forestry as specialisation in BSc while making recruitment to the forest department.
