It has been three days since the meat market has been out of action. The heat is now on the Mysore City Corporation officials as the hoteliers and owners of the eateries have started complaining to the district minister and the mayor of the city to take steps to restore it.
The meat merchants stopped sale of mutton following the Mysore City Corporation tightening the food safety norms and regulations and changing the set-up of abattoir management in the city a week back. “The change had to be brought in as we had seen too many hands in the abattoir had left little scope for quality management, moreover operationally also the system needed some up-gradation, which our health department has taken up. The closure of mutton sale in the city was a temporary one and I am hopeful of resolving the dispute amicably,” said Pushpalatha Chikkanna , mayor of Mysore.
Member of the Mysore Mutton Merchants Association, Anwar Ahmed, however, is not hopeful. “The officials have taken away the traditional method of procuring meat and have selected just one person on the basis of e-tendering process, which has left a wide gap between the actual market functionaries and procurement operations. This situation has left the merchants angry and helpless.”
Owners of the hotels that have mutton curry as their USP are going as far as Mandya and Bannur to fetch stock. “It adds to our cost, but cannot let down the customers,” said Ramappa, owner of the Bhuvaneshwari Military Hotel in the city.
“We have to use our private vehicles to transport meat from Bannur and Mandya as the meat merchants have begun obstructing the sheep vans coming into the city,” said manager of the Biriyani House in NR Mohalla.
There are reports of some unscrupulous elements posing as mutton sellers vending cut meat in autorickshaws and mini vans charging nothing less than `400 per kg as against about `300 in the regular market. Police stations in Hebbal, Vijayanagar and Saraswatipuram have booked cases against unauthorised selling of meat in the city.
