July 1, 2011, would forever be sealed in the memory of Sanjay and Nirmala. In one of the cruel ironies of life, the two, hailing from Chapra, Bihar, lost their two-and-half-year-old child, Sandeep, under mysterious circumstances on the same day Nirmala gave birth to their sixth child, a baby boy.

But how did Sandeep die? There is no answer to this question, not yet. There are conflicting reports on the cause of death. While police believe that Sandeep was killed by stray dogs, Bruhat Bangalore Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) officials aren't ready to accept the police version. Some are even pointing fingers at witchcraft, since Thursday night was amavsya (moonless night).

According to police, the incident happened between 3 am and 4 am on Friday. Sandeep accompanied his father to Neha Prakash Hospital where his mother was admitted. His father, police said, returned to the hospital late in the night in an inebriated state along with his brother. Finding him drunk, the hospital staff refused him permission to enter the hospital, which forced the three to sleep in the basement.

This is where the story gets hazy. According to the police version, the boy woke up between 3 am and 4 am and went out. Seeing him alone, the dogs attacked, dragged his body for about 300 meters from the hospital and killed him. The body was found near the Yelahanka New Town's 4th Phase bus stop in the morning after passersby noticed it and rang up the police.

Meanwhile, the father, who woke up at 5 am and found Sandeep missing, filed a complaint at the Yelahanka New Town police station. Around 6 am, police were alerted by the police control room that a dead body of a kid had been found near a private school close to the hospital. When the police arrived at the scene, their fears had come true: it was Sandeep's body.

Local residents shouted slogans against the BBMP for failing to control the stray dog menace, but the BBMP, on its part, refused to accept the theory.
