The Central Empowered Committee (CEC), which submitted its report on illegal mining to the Supreme Court on Monday, has recommended the closure of 18 mining companies while permitting three firms.

The three mining companies permitted to carry out mining are Nadeem Mines, Allam Prashanth Mines and Tiffin Baries, said an officer.

Sources said the list of companies whose mining activities have been recommended for closure includes Asha Minerals, Rajpura Mines, Chougale Minerals and Jeenath Trading Company. CEC submitted its reports on only 21 companies out of the 39 it was supposed to file.

The Supreme Court, on Monday, granted CEC’s plea for extra time to carry out the survey on mining companies in Bellary. CEC has partially finished survey in 53 mining companies. It surveyed 14 in the first round and recommended mining activities of 11 in the first survey report.

With Monday’s recommendation, the mining activities of 29 mining companies out of 99 will be halted. The survey and report on remaining mining companies will take another three or four months.

Meanwhile, the recommendation sent chills down the spine of mining companies who curiously tried to get the list of firms named in the CEC report.A mining company owner said the recommendation meant more trouble for employees as they will now be without work.

“Some mining owners meeting CEC officials at the lodge in which they were staying to discuss their investments, the future of their employees and the risks that possible closure could pose to the local economy. Their efforts have failed after the CEC recommended to shut 18 mining companies,” said an officer.
