A 14-year-old girl allegedly committed suicide by setting herself on fire in her house in Madavara village at Nelamangala on Friday morning.

The deceased, R Ranjitha, was a student of class IX in a government school in Nelamangala. The incident came to light at 9.15am when her classmates came to her house to pick her up. They knocked the door but did not get any response. When they peeped from the window, they found that the room was filled with smoke. They immediately alerted the neighbours, who broke open the door and doused fire, only to find that Ranjitha had died owing to burn injuries.

The neighbours told the police that at 9am, they saw Ranjitha in her school uniform. Her parents, Ramesh and Shobha, work in garment firms, told the police that they left the house at 8.30am. Ranjitha’s elder brother had also left home for work.

During preliminary investigation, the police found an empty bottle of kerosene. Also, the police found a SIM card from her house, but the mobile phone was not found.

Ranjitha’s parents did not know if their daughter had a mobile phone. The police said it is likely that Ranjitha was in touch with somebody about whom the parents were unaware of. The police said they would look into the call and message history of the SIM card as this will shed light on why Ranjitha ended her life.

The body was handed over to her family after postmortem.Family discord drives man to suicide

In another incident, a 28-year-old painter committed suicide in Sumanahalli on Thursday night.

The deceased, Somashekar, was an alcoholic. He left behind a suicide note, in which he wrote he was ending his life owing to poor relations with his parents and wife.

He committed suicide by hanging from a tree beside Beggars’ Colony premises. Passers-by found him hanging on Friday morning and informed the police.

The police said Somashekar had married Parvathi five years ago despite his parents’ disapproval. He then stopped living with his parents. Owing to addiction to alcohol, his relationship with his wife, too, soured and he was staying away from her for two years.

The police said this was Somashekar’s second suicide attempt in a week. Six days ago, he had consumed poison but was saved as his neighbours took him to a hospital. Three days after he was discharged, he ended is life.
