In a joint operation by the labour department and women and child welfare department, 10 children, including one girl, were rescued from the old port area of Mangalore on Wednesday.

The rescued children are in the age group of 7-15 with seven below 14 years of age. They have been shifted to the state remand home.

The three children, who were medically declared as above 14 years of age, were set free. The children were from Tamil Nadu and North Karnataka districts.

Informing about the incident, assistant labour commissioner Appaiah Shindihatti said, “These children were not employed directly by anybody in the old port area, but were working on ad hoc basis, doing odd works at the fishing jetty. They used to help the fishermen to gather fish strewn around into a heap in the landing area. They were either paid in cash or kind.”
