I-T department gets Rs 55,571 cr target for FY 2019 from Gujarat

The Income Tax department has been set a target to collect revenue of Rs55,571 crore from Gujarat in the current financial year, which is 18.75% higher than in the previous year.

The Income Tax department's total tax collection from the state was Rs46,800 crore for the year 2017-18, which has been fixed at Rs55,571 crore for 2018-19, Asha Agarwal, principal chief commissioner of Income Tax, Gujarat, told media-persons on Monday.

The IT department had netted Rs39,901 crore revenue from Gujarat in 2016-17, which rose 17.03% to Rs46,800 crore in the following year.

Agarwal also said the number of income tax filers in the state went up by 10.03 lakh to touch 57.16 lakh in 2017-18. She attributed the sharp rise to demonetisation and implementation of Goods and Services Tax (GST). She also said that as a part of the drive to widen the tax base, the Income Tax department has been given a target to add 9.88 lakh new tax filers in Gujarat in the current year. It is a part of Central Board of Direct Taxation's recent directive to IT department to add at least 1.25 crore tax filers this year.

A new income tax filer is someone who does not figure in the tax filing base at the beginning of the year, but one who files the tax return during the year.

The senior IRS official said that as part of measures to assist income tax payers, the department has established 19 Aaykar Seva Kendras in Gujarat, and two more are in the pipeline. The Gujarat IT department has set up a single window clearance cell for grievance redressal on its portal www.incometaxgujarat.org.

I-T dept to celebrate 158th Income Tax Day

The IT department will celebrate the 158th Income Tax Day on Tuesday. Income tax was first levied as a duty on July 24, 1860. Officials said that various events such as sapling plantation, blood donation camps, awareness programmes, painting, drawing & essay writing competitions on the importance of environment and cleanliness, felicitation of meritorious officers/staff, among others, would be held.
