On Friday, officials from US agency met the Ahmedabad Cyber cell police officers in connection to the Social Security Administration (SSA) call centre scam which was busted by Cyber cell on Thursday in Prahaladnagar. Gujarat police have sought the help of FBI.

As per officials, two years back the call centres officials posed as Internal Revenue Service (IRS) officers and duped US citizens. The cops raided down the illegal call centres and the entire process had come to a standstill for a while.

Cyber cell police said that the accused who were arrested in the fake call centre racket in the Prahaladnagar area used a different modus operandi.

Investigation revealed that the accused had access to the data of US citizens whose vehicle had got stolen. They would call those people posing as Social Security Administration (SSA) officers informing them that drugs had been recovered from their vehicles and traces of bloodstains had been found. They would then threaten the victims and would ask them to pay a fine on a certain account to ensure that they can get out of the mess.

AK Singh, Ahmedabad Police commissioner said, "In the investigation of the extortion scam, we have sought help from the FBI. With their help, we will be able to reveal who played what role in the scam. "

Suhel Daud, Assistant Legal Attache of FBI, said, "FBI Legat Office in New Delhi is working with the Gujarat Police on the case. This is an example of international cooperation that is needed to investigate these transnational criminal activities."

The officers are trying to track down the route through which the data of the US citizens came in the hands of the call centre owners.

"It is too early to say that the investigation will cross international boundaries, but we are trying to pinpoint the actual accused behind the scam" further said, AK Singh.
