Kashmiri girl revives candle making culture in Srinagar

An engineering student hailing from Elahi Bagh area of Srinagar is interested in making and designing candles since her childhood. Mehak Parvaz revived the culture of making candles at her home in part time. She has made candles of dynamic colours and multiple designs till date. Her designs and customized candles have attracted buyers in large numbers. She is receiving great response from people across the valley and has also received compliments and appreciation from them. People ordered candles on occasion of festivals, wedding ceremonies and birthdays. Mehak usually receives most of the orders thorough her social media accounts. She also import tools, materials and wax from outside J&K with support of her parents. Mehak delivers the order either through advance payment or on cash on delivery mode. She is doing her business at home and plans to open her wings to take forward her candle business in Kashmir. Speaking to ANI, Mehak said, “I was always fond of it since my childhood like the shapes of candles but with the time this culture ended. Earlier, it was used in load shedding but now inverters have come so they (candles) are hardly in use.” “I am getting orders, so accordingly, I make candles as per the requirement of customers, be it in term of colour, design or fragrance,” she added. Speaking to ANI, Mehak’s father Parvaz Ahmad said, “She was interested in painting since her childhood so we never stopped her and she did everything according to her wish. We always supported her.”
