A team comprising three National Investigation Agency (NIA) officials and a legal expert is set to interrogate David Coleman Headley, who confessed to masterminding the 26/11 Mumbai terror attack.
A team comprising three National Investigation Agency (NIA) officials and a legal expert is set to interrogate David Coleman Headley, a Pakistani-American Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) operative, who confessed to masterminding the 26/11 Mumbai terror attack.
The team, which landed in the United States on Tuesday, may question Headley on many aspects related to the attack, planned by Pakistan-based terrorists and their sympathisers.
According to home ministry sources, the team will question Headley in the presence of his lawyer and a Federal Bureau of Investigation official. Contrary to reports, the team will subject Headley to direct questioning. It will be for the first time since his arrest in October 2009 that Headley will be interrogated by an Indian team. Sources said the team has documentary and other evidence related to Headley’s visits to India in connection with 26/11, as well as the people he met. The team has carried a questionnaire covering aspects of Headley’s activities, particularly his LeT links.
“The focus will be on places he visited in India and the reconnaissance he carried out for the 26/11 attack,” sources said. The ministry has a back-up plan to provide assistance to the team. “If required, more experts can be sent to join the team in America,” sources said. Headley’s statement will be recorded by a special law officer accompanying the team, after which the NIA may file a chargesheet against him on the basis of a case filed against him and his accomplice Tahawwur Rana for waging war against India and the Unlawful Activities Prevention Act.
The NIA team’s departure to the US was delayed by a day due to last-minute preparations.
