A concert by US singer Ariana Grande on Monday night turned out to be deadly for 22 people, when a suicide bomber blew himself up at Manchester Arena a little after 10.33 PM GMT.

The terrorist attack confirmed by UK PM Theresa May, could be one of the deadliest in the country since July 2005, when 52 people were killed in a suicide bombing on London's transport system by four British Muslims.

However, the attack at Manchester Arena could be seen as an addition to the long list of terror attacks that claimed thousands of lives across the world since 9/11.

9/11 terror attacks

Seen as the deadliest and often assumed to be the turning point for ways to deal with terrorism across the world, the 9/11 terror attacks claimed more than 3,000 lives in Washington DC and New York. 19 militants associated with al-Qaeda hijacked four passenger airlines of United Airlines and American Airlines and attacked World Trade Center, Pentagon and a field in Pennsylvania. The mastermind behind these attacks Osama Bin Laden was put to death, almost 10 years after the attack, by US Special Forces.

London Underground trains, 2005

A series of suicide bombing on three London Underground trains and a double-decker bus on July 7, 2005 killed 52 people and wounded more than 770. All four attackers, who died in the blasts, were found to be linked to al-Qaeda and were carrying bombs in their bags.

Mumbai terror attack 2008


A 60-hour-long seize that kept the financial capital of India at ransom, was carried out by ten terrorists of Pakistan-based terror outfit Laskar-e-Taiba on November 26, 2008. Around 166 people were killed in the attack which was carried out on luxury hotels such as Taj Mahal Palace and Oberoi Trident, a Jewish centre and other important places across the city such as CST station, Marine Drives, etc.

2014 Peshawar school massacre

In what could be described as the most 'cruel' terrorist attack in the history of mankind, Taliban militants attacked the Army Public School in Pakistan, killing 148 people, including 132 children. In the nine-hour-long rampage conducted by seven gunmen affiliated with the Tehrik-i-Taliban (TTP), schoolchildren were methodically shot in the head, while some were set on the wire.

November Paris attacks

The attacks which took place on the night of November 13, 2015 were described by the then President Francois Hollande as an 'act of war' organised by the Islamic State (IS) militant group. Gunmen and suicide bombers attacked Bataclan concert hall, a sports stadium Stade de France, restaurants and bars across Paris simultaneously and killed around 130 people.

2016 Brussels bombings

Three coordinated suicide bombings were carried out on March 22, 2016 by five terrorists belonging to Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS). Twin blasts occurred at Zaventem international airport, while one took place at Maalbeek metro station in central Brussels, in which 32 people died, excluding three bombers.
 

2016 Orlando nightclub shooting

While the then US President Barack Obama called Orlando nightclub shooting as an incident of "act of hate", authorities never ruled out whether 29-year-old Omar Mateen was linked to any terrorist organisation or not. In the "worst mass shooting in the US in 25 years", Pulse, one of the biggest nightclubs in Orlando, was attacked by a security guard in which 49 people were killed.

Matten was later shot dead by Orlando Police Department (OPD) after a three-hour standoff.

Germany Christmas Market

A Tunisian man, whom ISIS claimed was 'a soldier of the Islamic State' attacked a Christmas market in central Berlin on December 19, 2016. Anis Amri, who was suspected to have carried out the attack, deliberately drove the truck into the market, leaving 12 people dead, and 56 injured. He was killed by police in Milan a few days after the attack.

Pakistan Sufi shrine attack


A suicide bombing carried out Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS) at the Lal Shahbaz Qalander dargah in Sehwan, killed 88 people. Following which, Pakistan killed more than 100 militants in Karachi and other parts of Sindh, Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa and Balochistan to 'avenge' for the lives lost in the attack.
