Misbah-ul-Haq struck the fastest fifty in test history as Pakistan continued to punish Australia, stretching their overall lead to 519 runs at lunch on the penultimate day of the second and final test in Abu Dhabi on Sunday.

Misbah, often criticised for his ponderous batting, took just 21 balls to complete his half century from the final delivery before the interval to remain unbeaten on 52.

The right-hander hit four sixes -- including three in one Steve Smith over -- and as many fours to improve on Jacques Kallis's 24-ball fifty against Zimbabwe in Cape Town in 2005.

Azhar Ali was unbeaten on 72 at the other end, staying on course for his second century of the match as Pakistan cruised to 210-3 in their second innings.

In-form Younus Khan (46) was the only batsman dismissed in yet another poor session for Australia, who struggled both as a bowling and fielding unit.

Younus, who has hit scores of 106, 103 not out and 213 in his last three innings, was trapped leg before by part-time spinner Smith.

If any consolation for the Australians, this was the first time the former Pakistan captain failed to reach three figures in the two-test series, which he finishes with 468 runs to his name.

Pakistan cruised to victory in the opening test in Dubai and are almost certain of securing a first test series victory over Australia for 20 years.
