Aarushi’s parents live for justice

A year after Aarushi Talwar was found murdered in her Noida home, her dentist parents have turned to spiritualism to get over the pain. They often wish the murderer had killed them too.

“She is giving us strength. I keep seeing her (in my dreams) and she tells me ‘mom you have to be strong’. She would have expected us to fight for justice. That is our only reason to live today,” mother Nupur Talwar said.

Sitting at her Hauz Khas clinic, Nupur said: “The killer should have killed us too. That way, we could have been with her.” A few months ago, Nupur said her husband did not want to live. “But he is coming out of it. He says we should make sure that our daughter’s killer is caught. The sole aim of our life is to get justice.”

The Talwars haven’t had a good night’s sleep since May 16 when their 14-year-old daughter was found with her throat slit. The family’s help, Hemraj, was found murdered on the terrace a day later.

“The night it took place was the last time we had slept. Since then, we get up at odd hours or after two-three hours of sleep. Then we spend the night talking to each other,” Nupur said.

The couple have moved to south Delhi, away from their home in Noida that holds painful memories. “We could not live there,” they both say.

Rajesh, who has stopped socialising and meets only close friends and relatives, said he sometimes cries while talking to Aarushi’s friends. “We are in touch with her friends. They all are so tense. While talking to them, I sometimes start crying. They want to meet the president and seek justice. But I have not decided about that yet. The past one year has been difficult. We are dying every day,” he said.

Asked if he wants to start a family again, he said: “Considering our age, I don’t know.”
