In a gruesome incident that sent shock waves across the city, a leading realty player and hotelier of the city, Dayabhai Kotecha, was stabbed to death here on Wednesday evening. He was 70.

He owned a construction company, Kotecha Builders Pvt Ltd, and a hotel, named Hotel Royal Inn. He was one of the oldest businessmen associated with land trading in
the city.

Kotecha was killed when he was alone in his office chamber located in a building, Star Plaza, near Phulchap Chowk of the city.

According to sources, an unidentified person, aged about 35 years, came to see Kotecha at his office located on the first floor of Star Plaza building at about 7.45 pm on Wednesday. Soon after the person left, the office staff found a profusely bleeding Kotecha slumped in his chair. He had been stabbed thrice with a knife. He was immediately rushed to the local Wockhardt Hospital, but he succumbed to his injuries.

On receipt of information, city cops reached the hospital. At the same time, Kotecha’s family members, along with his friends and other builders, arrived  at the hospital. The body was sent to Civil Hospital for post-mortem.

Cops have found a napkin and a knife from the spot where Kotecha was done to death. The police have registered an FIR against unidentified person under Section 302 of Indian Penal Code (IPC). Enmity over land is suspected to be the reason behind the murder. Police have reportedly focused investigation of the case towards land grabbers.
Kotecha’s cremation will take place here on Thursday morning.

Undisputably a pioneer in real estate business in the city, Kotecha has three sons – Raja, Kishore and Kamal. They were associated with their father in the realty business. Though Kotecha had built many buildings and apartments, he had made a name for himself in land trading.

Sources recalled that Raja was beaten up by some persons at Haripar (Pal), on the outskirts of the city, over a plot of land, about three months back.

A number of businessmen and traders’ organisations have condemned the ghastly murder and urged the police to expeditiously bring the guilty to book. At the time of going to press, it could not be ascertained if the police had arrested anyone in
connection with the murder.
