AURAIYA (UP): An executive engineer of the Uttar Pradesh public works department (PWD) was beaten to death by a Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) legislator and his supporters after he refused to pay Rs50 lakh for the birthday celebrations of chief minister Mayawati next month.

The legislator, Shekhar Tiwari, was arrested on Wednesday evening in Rania, said SP Kanpur (rural) N Ravinder. Tiwari is a historysheeter with cases of murder and abduction against him.

The Mayawati government sought to distance itself from the incident.“It is a criminal case and those found guilty will not be spared. A criminal incident should not be given political colour. CM Mayawati has nothing to do with the case,” said cabinet secretary Shashank Shekhar Singh, at a hurriedly-convened news conference in Lucknow.

Tiwari and his associates – Manoj Tyagi and Bhatia —forcibly entered engineer MK Gupta’s house at Gail Vihar Colony under Diviapur police circle here on Tuesday night and started beating up, according to a police complaint lodged by the victim’s wife Shashi Gupta.

The trio locked Shashi in the bathroom and continued beating her husband. Later, they left the severely-injured engineer at Diviapur police station in Auraiya, about 100 km from Kanpur. Gupta was declared dead at the hospital.

“An FIR under various sections of the IPC, including 302 (murder), has been lodged against the MLA and his two associates at Diviapur police station,” said station house officer Hoshiyar Singh. “The MLA left Gupta in an unconscious state at Diviapur police station around 5 am,” said director general of police Vikram Singh.

Over 10,000 PWD engineers went on strike demanding action against the accused. The engineers also demanded a compensation of Rs25 lakh and pension equivalent to the last salary drawn by the victim for his wife.

The state government announced a compensation of Rsfive lakh and a government job for the victim’s wife.

Samajwadi Party has called  a state bandh on Thursday.
