An Assyrian tablet from the 600 BC, a letter written by Nanasaheb Peshwa in the 18th century, manuscripts of Rigveda and Bhagvad Gita… these and many more things of historical importance are on display at a calligraphy exhibition at JJ School of Arts. The rare artefacts have been brought to Mumbai for the first time from an institute in Pune to be exhibited in the six-day event, Califest.

The Bhandarkar Oriental Research Institute in Pune, which has been preserving manuscripts since 1917, has brought around 30 of them from different languages, printed on different mediums like birch bark, paper, palm leaf, etc. This is for the first time that the manuscripts have been carried out of the Pune institute.

Shreenand Bapat, who represented the institute at Califest, said: “These artefacts date back to the 15th century and even older. One of the manuscripts (in Persian) on a tablet from Assyria dates back to 600 BC. These manuscripts have either been donated to the institute or have been collected by it. The

Assyrian tablet was donated to the institute in 1940s.” He said the institute boasts of around 30,000 collections.

Among the rare things on display was a Mahazar scroll belonging to the 18th century, which is a judgement copy on a land dispute in those days, a letter written by Nanasaheb Pehwa between 1720-1740 AD written in Modi script,  manuscripts of the history of

Kashmir written in Sharada script, Persian and Rigveda manuscripts.

The festival has been organised by Achyut Palav, who is a former professor at JJ School. “The main inspiration behind Califest is creating awareness about calligraphy,” said Palav.

The festival was inaugurated on Monday by Uddhav Thackeray, who is an alumnus of
the college.
