HYDERABAD: The Telugu Desam Party has demanded that the UPA government contain its "over-zealousness" and not sign the Indo-US nuclear deal which was detrimental to the interests of our country.

In a statement here on Saturday, TDP president and United National Progressive Alliance (UNPA) Convenor N Chandrababu Naidu said that the statement made by US President George W Bush and the 'utterances' by other US leaders over the deal clearly "called the bluff" of Prime Minister Manmohan Singh who claimed the deal was in the "national interest."

"The US has made it clear that the Indo-US nuclear deal will be governed strictly by the Hyde Act and not the 123 Agreement, as being claimed by Prime Minister Manmohan Sigh. This makes it clear that the Prime Minister has misled Parliament and also the country on the controversial deal," Naidu pointed out.

The changes made by the US Congress in the Bill confirmed the Left and the opposition parties' apprehensions over fuel supplies and reprocessing technologies, he said.

The Government of India failed to address these issues of concern.

He demanded that the deal be put to debate once again in Parliament and all doubts raised by the Left and other opposition parties be cleared first. The UPA government should take all steps to safeguard India's interests and only then sign the deal, the TDP chief said.
