With contractors agreeing to the deadline, the civic body has promised to make city roads scarfree in just three days

The BMC’s latest claim that there would be no potholes on city roads by August 17 might come as good news for Mumbaikars, but the city will have to wait and watch. The municipal corporation has asked the contractors hired for pothole repair to fill them up by coming Monday. The contractors have agreed to the deadline.

The road department officials met additional municipal commissioner RA Rajeev on Wednesday. The contractors, and representatives of Carboncor were also present at the meeting. During the meeting, the issue of contractors’ reluctance to use Carboncor technology was also discussed.

The contractors complained of the many factors that undid pothole repair work using Carboncor technology. The contractors cited problems like low lying areas, waterlogging, weak foundation, and mismatch of profile and the surface because of which the material could not be used on potholes.

The contractors also alleged that the ward officers also did not allow them to use other material to make a proper base. Leakages from the water pipes or drains only made the matters worse, the contractors complained.

The chief engineer of roads issued orders to all wards to allow contractors to fill potholes with other material. However, he clarified that the contractors would have to fill the potholes as specified in the tender — potholes deeper than 30 mm would have to be filled with metal and grit; those with a weak base would be filled with bitumen. He also directed that roads prone to waterlogging would need proper drainage and leakage in pipelines would have to be attended by the concerned department.

“The contractors assured us that they will do the job as specified and will not give Mumbaikars a chance to complain,” Rajeev said.
