NEW DELHI: The Women and Child Development Ministry has convened a meeting of its advisory group tomorrow to explore legal options against UP police officials for their alleged character assassination of murdered teenaged girl Aarushi Talwar.

"Yes, the Minister has convened a meeting tomorrow to explore the available options," a senior official of the Women and Child Development Ministry said.

The UP police, which is investigating the twin murder of Aarushi Talwar and domestic help Hemraj is under fire from all quarters for using alleged derogatory language while describing the sequence of events.

Union Minister Renuka Chowdhary on Thursday demanded suspension of a senior Uttar Pradesh police official for his reported remarks insinuating that the murdered Noida school girl was "characterless".

Tomorrow's meeting will be attended by lawyers, women activists and representatives of National Commission for Protection of Child Rights (NCPCR).

Chowdhury had asked the ministry officials to find out if the cops violated laws meant for protection of minors by their public disclosure of an alleged liason between 14-year-old Arushi and family servant Hemraj.

UP police officials had said last week said that Aarushi fell victim to an "honour killing" after her father Rajesh Talwar -- who is now the prime accused -- found her and Hemraj in an "objectionable position."

The NCPCR has also objected to the stigmatisation of the minor.

"It would be inappropriate to join issues with anyone on this subject. A minor has died and the priority at this point is to save her dignity and tell the investigating agency that this is no way to deal with the subject," NCPCR member Sandhya Bajaj said.
"We are not denying the fact that they must have found something in their investigation but her character assassination on the basis of the investigation is unfair. So we will explore all the possible ways to ensure that this act is not repeated," she said.

Bajaj said her ministry was examining all legal options for filing a defamation case against the police officer.

"We are meeting on Monday to examine what are the options available with us to charge the Uttar Pradesh Police for using derogatory language for 14 year old Aarushi," said Ranjana Kumar, Director of Centre for Social Research, an NGO.

"We condemn the way the police has described Aarushi's character. She is not around to defend herself and police even said that the father was as characterless as the daughter was. This is all very objectionable and we have decided to fight it out with whatever options are there for us," added Kumar.
