Badal pleads for clearance of Tourist train

CHANDIGARH : Punjab Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal on Saturday impressed upon the Railway Minister Laloo Prasad to immediately accord approval for the running of a tourist luxury train in Punjab, which was also proposed to be taken to other Northern Indian states.

Badal raised the issue during his meeting with the Railway Minister in New Delhi today, a Punjab Government release said here. The grant of approval to the train to be run jointly by Punjab Government and the Railway Ministry with the support of the Union Tourism Ministry has been delayed.

Punjab Government has already deposited its share of Rs three crore out of the total budget of Rs 13 crore. The signing of the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) has been delayed due to some rethinking on the project in the Railway Ministry, official sources said.

The Chief Minister asked the Railway Minister to direct the Railway Board for signing MoU in this regard as per the earlier terms and conditions of 50:50 sharing between the state government and the Ministry of Railway.

Badal also discussed various other projects, including construction of under bridges, upgradation of railway stations and laying of new lines with Prasad who agreed in principal to create world class Railway infrastructure in Punjab.

The Chief Minister urged the Railway Minister for the raising and re-modeling of 17 culverts railway bridges in the 4 districts of Muktsar, Ferozepur, Bhatinda and Faridkot and also raised

The issue of the conversion of cattle crossing gate at village Biring Khera in block Lambi of District Muktsar into a manned crossing railway gate for which the State would deposit the requisite funds.

He also demanded that the construction of railway over bridge in Gidderbaha on Bhatinda-Hanumangarh line should be cleared by the Ministry of Railway immediately besides requesting for the upgradation of railway stations of Jalandhar and Ludhiana.

He sought the Union Minister's personnel intervention for an early clearance of the proposal for the construction of 18 new railway bridges in different districts of the state to reduce the traffic congestion and ensure smooth movement of the vehicular traffic, especially at the railway crossings.

The release said that Prasad assured the Chief Minister that all the issues raised by him relating to the up gradation of railway infrastructure in terms of the construction of new railway over and under bridge, railway stations and railway lines would be materialized in a time bound frame.
