NEW DELHI: Gearing up to ensure a smoke-free environment, Delhi University will form special teams to help bring down smoking among students.
    
The varsity would also introduce a Post-graduate course in physical education by 2010-2011 to make students aware of the virtues of a healthy lifestyle.
    
One of the teachers will act as the nodal officer and nearly five to six students will be in the tobacco free brigade, which will aim to bring down tobacco addiction amongst students, Vice Chancellor Deepak Pental told reporters on the occasion of the 'World No Tobacco Day'.
    
"If need be students may be charged now for smoking in public. Along with admission forms there will one page on harmful effects of smoking and how exercise can help in curtailing it," he said.
    
Of the other methods to curtail tobacco addiction amongst the youth, the varsity plans to include regular medical education programmes.
    
Rickshaw pullers, local policemen and small time tobacco sellers would also be educated regarding the harmful effects of smoking and hoardings will appear regarding the same on the backs of rickshaws.
    
"We will ask these small time vendors to take up any other vocation for which the university will finance," the Vice Chancellor said.
    
According to World Lung Foundation President G R Khatri, "because of their age and their easily addictive nature, smoking is becoming more popular amongst female students. In our last survey it was found that 31 per cent male and seven per cent female students smoke."
    
"In that survey we find that students get addicted to smoking after joining college. So this new survey will see who all do it and then we could chalk out what intervention is needed to be done," he said.
    
As part of the no smoking campaign he also said that a portable carbon monoxide estimator and vital capacity smoker will go around the college to show students how badly their lungs is effected.
    
In the medical education programme there will be education on degree of tobacco in the air, promoting awareness of outsiders being effected because of your smoking.
