Parents enroll children for mock interview classes to ensure that they survive the grilling

In a frenzy to prepare their kids for the interviews during pre-primary  admission season at city schools, more number of parents are enrolling their three- year old kids in mock interview classes provided by local playgroups.

Savita Kamble, 28, a resident of Vashi, is one such parent who has enrolled her child at Kidzee. “I am just worried that my child will clam up and not provide the answers. The training helped him in getting familiar with a stranger questioning him.”

She further added, “Besides mock interviews, the playgroup also provided us with tips on how to answer questions asked by the schools at the time of admission,” she said.

The mock sessions usually last from 15-30 minutes where children are asked to recite poems and rhymes. “We usually conduct  the sessions from October to January when there is a huge demand. Since  parents get anxious about their children securing admissions, we also provide them with tips that will help them cope,” said Jayashree Ahuja, Little Tots Playschool, Nerul.

Fear of failure drives parents to also enlist the help of experienced pre-primary teachers. Vidya Samant (name changed) admitted to taking tuitions for kids at Dadar. “I charge Rs500 per hour for the tuitions. Upper middle class families who aspire to enroll their children in ICSE schools still approach me,” she said. Kidzee has also put up information on how the playgroup prepares children for the interviews on its website.

Commenting on the stress  parents and children face during admission times, Arundhati Chavan, president, PTA United Forum said, “There are  many tuition classes for nursery children. Due to pressure from schools, parents are forced to enroll their kids in such classes. Only a complete ban on interviews at school will put an end to this.”
