Daughter of late BJP leader Pramod Mahajan, Poonam Mahajan-Rao is in Gujarat to campaign for the BJP

AHMEDABAD: Fighting a painful legal battle in Mumbai against her own uncle and trying to find her feet in politics, daughter of late BJP general secretary Pramod Mahajan, Poonam Mahajan-Rao is the new campaigner for the BJP in Gujarat.

On her first visit to the state, Poonam, who is the general secretary of the Maharashtra unit of Bharatiya Janata Yuva Morcha, will be campaigning in all major cities of the state including Ahmedabad, Vadodara and Surat to woo young voters.

In an exclusive interview with DNA on Monday, Poonam said that she would do her party's bidding during the four-day visit beginning Monday in the state.

Poonam has taken out time from the hectic court hearings back home as part of the legal fight against her uncle Pravin Mahajan, who has been accused of killing her father. She said although the case had mentally and physically fatigued her, she would fulfill her duty as a BJP worker and as the daughter of Pramod Mahajan.

"It is hard, tiring and even depressing but I have learnt to deal with it," she said referring to the ongoing court case. "I miss my father and wish he could have taught me more about the nitty-gritty of politics, but his loss is something I have to live with," she said. Reposing her faith in the judiciary she said, "It was a hideous crime and it is important for us to continue with the legal fight so that no younger brother ever thinks of his elder brother like that again."

On Gujarat politics and her impressions about CM Narendra Modi, she said, “I have met him a couple of times and am his fan. We all look up to him.

“The kind of development he has brought in Gujarat is what we want for Maharashtra too.” She also does not think the bogie of 2002 riots will haunt the party in this election. “It is behind us and now we should focus on the development work he has done. It is because of that work that even the common man is with Narendrabhai," she said.

On the relations between his father and Modi she said, "They had a good working relationship and my father always admired him for his development work and wanted that kind of progress for the whole country.”

As for her own political ambitions and plans of contesting elections, she said, "Right now it is too early to talk about it. My father would have wanted me learn and gain more experience first so I want to concentrate on Yuva Morcha and try and get more youth to join the BJP."
