London-India office to be set up in Mumbai, Delhi

LONDON: London’s colourful and popular mayor, Ken Livingstone will soon be arriving in Mumbai to set a London India Office that will promote trade, business, culture, tourism and educational links between the two cosmopolitan cities.

Livingstone, often described as ‘Red Ken’ because of his leftist leanings, will be in India from the 18th to 23 November and would be visiting Delhi and Mumbai.

Accompanied by a high-powered delegation that will include members of the House of Lords, captains of industry and celebrities, the Mayor will be speaking at a number of conferences including Planet Cities: A Sustainability Exchange, with Nobel Prize winner Dr Rajendra K Pachauri.

He will attend a seminar on Building Global Cities in Mumbai with the Maharastra state authorities and speak at Think London seminars for Indian businesses.

The delegation will hold meetings with India’s top business houses including the Tatas, ICICI bank, BCCI and CII.

London also plays a very important part in the Hindi film industry and Livingstone will be hosting a showcase of London and Indian creative industries with special guest Amitabh Bachchan.

The Mayor will be signing a film agreement between Film London and the Film and Television Guild of India.

“India is a rising economic superpower. It has a growth rate of over nine per cent a year, 1.2 billion people and it already accounts for the second highest number of inward investment projects into London after the US,” said Livingstone.

“The Indian community is already the largest minority ethnic community in London and London’s strength as the most globalised city is helped immensely by its Indian community — there are already 10,000 Indian-owned businesses in the capital. Cultural interaction between India and London is going to increase even further,” he added.

Apart from setting up an office in Mumbai, Livingstone will also be opening a similar office in Delhi and signing a city to city partnership agreement with the Chief Minister of Delhi.

He will also be signing a tourism agreement in Delhi.  The Mayor will also be visiting Amritsar to meet the Chief Minister of Punjab.
