CHENNAI: Welcoming Congress President Sonia Gandhi's scathing attack on BJP on the Sethusamudram project, Tamil Nadu Chief Minister and DMK chief M Karunanidhi said on Sunday her words had given 'solace' to the people of the state.

Addressing an election rally in Gujarat on Saturday, Sonia had made it clear that the BJP had taken up the Ram Sethu issue only for political gains by arousing the emotions of people, Karunanidhi wrote in DMK's mouthpiece 'Murasoli'.

"Her (Sonia) speech has offered solace to the people of Tamil Nadu," the chief minister said.

On AIADMK supremo Jayalalithaa moving the Madras High Court to stay the proceedings of the state Assembly's Privileges Committee against her, Karunanidhi cited a ruling by the then Assembly Speaker K Rajaram during M G Ramachandran's regime in 1983 that the judiciary had no power to interfere in the proceedings of the House.

Jayalalithaa had moved the court not only in contravention to the procedures followed during her previous regime but also those followed during the period of MGR, whom she claimed to be her political mentor, he said.

Reacting to BJP state President L Ganesan's demand that land acquisition for airport expansion be made in a transparent manner, Karunanidhi said everything, including the tender for free colour TV scheme, had been transparent.
