The Expressway will stretch by 25 km, cut travel time between city and Panvel

Maharashtra State Road Development Corporation (MSRDC) will undertake the Rs700 crore project to extend Mumbai-Pune expressway from Kalamboli to Sion by the end of this year.

“Fresh tenders for the proposed 25 km-long, 14-lane highway will be floated by the end of October to ensure that  bidding modalities are over by December 2007,” said Anil Deshmukh, Public Works Minister (MSRDC). The cabinet recently approved the new tender document.

Deshmukh said that it will be the first urban access control project in India that will help people reach Mumbai from Panvel in less time.

A tender floated internationally by MSRDC earlier had received a weak response. The Malaysian company that responded raised its quote of Rs48 lakh as consultation charges to Rs1.38 crore.

As a result, MSRDC will now float the tender nationally to ensure better response.

MSRDC has relaxed the eligibilty criteria for bidders this time around. The bidders should have an experience of handling a project of at least Rs350 crore, instead of Rs750 crores set earlier.

Deshmukh said the project will be tendered separately for three equal parts of the road. “There will be a different implementing agency for each 8.5 km stretch to ensure completion of the project within 18 months,” he added. He refused to comment on the probable toll hike once the project is over.

Deshmukh had formally announced the project to develop the road between Kalamboli and Bhabha Atomic Research Centre (BARC) via Sion during the last budget session of the state legislature.

The project will be implemented on build, operate and transfer basis.

The survey report and the blueprint of the project has been prepared by STUP Consultants. PWD has already acquired land for the project.
