NEW DELHI: A musical and poetic tribute to the National Flag marked the celebrations of 'flag day' in the capital here on Friday night.

At a colourful event held at Siri Fort auditorium, India's renowned artistes and poets - Pandit Jasraj, Pandit Hariprasad  Chaurasia, Javed Akhtar, Pandit Bhawani Shankar, U Srinivas,  Pandit Vijay Ghate, and S V Ramani - paid an extravagant tribute  to the National Tricolour through their live performances and  rendition of melodic poetry which infused in the audience gathered with a surge of patriotism.
  
Hosted by the Indian Council for Cultural Relations, 'Tiranga', an event conceptualized by Pandit Jasraj's daughter Durga Jasraj to celebrate 60 years of India's Independence on a day that is described as 'Tiranga Diwas', music maestroes Pandit Jasraj, Pandit Hariprasad Chaurasia, Pandit Bhawani Shankar, U Srinivas, Pandit Vijay Ghate, and writer poet Javed Akhtar created an air of patriotism all around by their ''poetic and musical interpretation of the National Flag' wherein all the elements of the Indian National Flag - the colours saffron,  white, green and the Ashok Chakra - were described through poems recited by Javed Akhtar.

The most captivating feature of the evening was a 'jugalbandi' by all the legendary artistes.

Speaking on the occasion, Durga Jasraj said, ''there are many youngsters who are not aware of the meaning and strength of the flag, it is for them that a concept like 'Tiranga Diwas' gets motivation to become a movement.''

She said it was one of the prime reasons that she initiated such a concept.
 
Information and Broadcasting Minister Priya Ranjan Dasmunsi was so impressed with the whole idea and its portrayal that he declared that his ministry "is taking this project for Doordarshan and all other possible networks within India and outside."
