LONDON: London-based India Association has donated a total of £1,00,000 to two British Institutions engaged in AIDS and Cancer research.

Association chairman Balwant Grewal, who raised the funds through a marathon 4,096 km ‘Charity Walk’ in India last year, presented a cheque each for £50,000 to Professor Colin Green, Professor of Surgical Science from the University College, London and Dr Moses Kepembwa, Consultant Physician HIV, at St Marks Institute, Harrow.

The cheques were presented at a Gala Dinner organised by the association here on Saturday night attended among others by Lord Mohammad Sheikh, Veerendra Sharma, newly-elected NRI Labour MP, Dr Rami Ranger, MBE chairman of the event and Gitesh Sharma, Minister, India House.

Grewal, 69, said he would undertake yet another walk — Parliament to Parliament — from Edinburgh in Scotland to Westminster in London from October 10 and the proceeds would be donated to the Bowel Cancer research at St Marks Institute, Harrow. Grewal’s wife Harjit Grewal was also honoured.

Ranger said it was an occasion to celebrate the success of the ‘Great Charity Walk’ by the association chairman Balwant Grewal, popularly known as ‘Boby Grewal’ who covered the distance from Amritsar in Punjab to Kanyakumari in Tamil Nadu in five months.

“What he enjoyed the most was the world famous Indian hospitality. Wherever he went, he was received with warmth,” Ranger said.

GS Gujral, CBE, chief of the International Punjabi Society, Jassi Khangura, MLA in the Punjab Assembly, K D Row, Chief of Air India, UK and Ireland and Dr Simon Gabe Consultant Physician for Bowel Cancer also participated in the event. A group of dancers from Punjab and Deepali Wattal, a singer from Kashmir, entertained the audience.
