The Crime Intelligence Unit of the city crime branch on Monday arrested three men who allegedly stood as guarantors in court to help individuals secure bails.

Police suspect some lawyers to also be involved in the case as the arrested were not well versed in legal nuances.
The trio, identified as Rajesh Babji Kadam, 37, Chandrakant Arjun Khamkar, 54, and Dhiren Narayandas Katira,50, was arrested from different locations in the city.
Investigating officer and Police Sub-Inspector Ajay Sawant of the CIU said, “The accused used to roam the court’s premises in search of individuals who had been issued bail orders by the court, but did not have any guarantors. The trio would then take money from such individuals to stand in as their guarantors.”
Police said that Kadam had appeared in the Esplanade court as guarantor for Sameer Kasam Sheikh, an accused in an Economic Offences Wing case. In the same case, Khamkar had procured forged documents to help secure the bail order.
Katira had stood as guarantor for one Sanjeev Kishan Kriplani, who had been arrested by the Marine Drive police in 2006. Police seized various rubber stamps belonging to the tehsildar’s office, 17 solvency certificates, 22 bail related documents and printing kits from the accused.
“We suspect that the gang was operating in Mumbai and neighbouring cities. Two similar cases had earlier been registered against Khemkar,” said Sawant.
When asked whether lawyers could be involved with the gang, Sawant said, “We are investigating the case from all possible angles and further interrogations of the accused will clear all doubts on how the gang functioned.” The trio has been remanded in police custody till August 10.
