NEW DELHI: Unlike the hip series on HBO, an entourage in not always cool. In fact it can make things pretty hot for those not part of the inner circle.

India’s poster girl tennis player Sania Mirza has now split ways with her South African trainer Heath Mathews. The official take is that since she is now fit and playing well she needs a full-time coach and a part-time trainer unlike the time when she was injured and Mathews was indispensable for her rehab.

But the tennis grapevine is abuzz with talk of differences between Mathews and the Mirza family over his personal affairs. Monetary considerations also figure in the split.

Earlier too Sania’s travelling coach John Farrington was said to have gone his way after he was found out of sync with those who have groomed her game over the years.

Differences have also cropped up between the player and her parents over her relationship with an Indian male tennis player. But none of these issues have — as yet — soured the player’s relationship with her close ones.

Tennis entourages have been a source of trouble for many a woman tennis player. The likes of Steffi Graf, Jelena Dokic, Mary Pierce, Jennifer Capriati and the Williams sisters faced quite a bit of hassle on account of their fathers. But the divergent viewpoints only cropped up once they were established professionals in the echelons of the Tour.

Sania’s recent run shows that her game is on track, her entourage also needs to ensure that monitoring her career does not turn into controlling even the technical aspects. Meanwhile Mathews services have not been lost to Indian sport as he has been taken up as a full-time trainer  of the Mittal Champions Trust.
