KARACHI: Australian Dav Whatmore is believed to have lost the race for Pakistan cricket team's coach after an unimpressive meeting with the players during the training camp in Abbotabad.
Sources in the team claim that the Pakistan Cricket Board had picked the experienced Whatmore as their new coach, but when he met players at the camp some of the things he discussed proved costly for him.
"He basically was pampering the players and left an impression on manager Talat Ali that contrary to what people said about him he appeared to be in awe of the players.
"Secondly, he wanted a big support staff including a batting coach, bowling coach and a fielding coach," a source said.
Eventually the Board, after consulting the players and team management, opted for another Australian Geoff Lawson as the new Pakistan coach.
Manager Talat Ali asked him what he would do if they were to employ such a large support staff, Whatmore replied, "I will be the head coach and supervise them."
"Worse, he had no answer when Talat asked him how he expected to improve the players' batting at this level of cricket. After this meeting, the first negative comments about Whatmore were given to the Board," the source disclosed.
The source said Lawson was picked because he appeared to be a sincere and no nonsense person.
"He (Lawson) seemed to be a straight talking and honest guy who had some original ideas of how he wanted to run the team. The Board also feared that Whatmore might follow the line of former coach Bob Woolmer, who had also succumbed to players' power and failed to assert himself in the team," source said.
