Sensex surges to two-week high of 14,411.95

MUMBAI: The BSE Sensex on Wednesday surged to a two-week high on buying by funds in heavyweight stocks led by banks, metal and capital goods stocks.

The Sensex shot up by 116.45 points at 14,411.95 after touching the day's high of 14,449.38, as banking stocks led by ICICI Bank soared on reports Goldman Sachs raised its rating on banking shares.

The wide-based National Stock Exchange index Nifty also rose by 34.35 points at 42,48.65, after touching a high of 4257 and a low of 4,214.30 points.

Banking major and index-related stocks of ICICI Bank and State Bank of India remained the star performers. The biggest gainer was metal index, which rose 113.37 points at 10,724.96. Bank index rose by 108.76 points at 7790.27.

Capital goods stocks were also in demand and the segment index gained 141.85 points at 11,499.91.
