ISLAMABAD: Suspected Baloch nationalists on Saturday blew up a main gas pipeline in Pakistan's restive south-
western province, disrupting fuel supply to its capital Quetta and adjoining areas.

The explosives were planted under the 16 inch wide pipeline and the blast occurred at 12.30 pm TV channels reported.

The pipeline was providing gas to Quetta and neighbouring areas and the blast disrupted the supply, causing hardships to
the people in the region reeling under severe cold due to heavy rains and snowfall.

Gas-rich Balochistan has been witnessing violence with tribal groups pushing for greater political and economic rights.

No one has claimed responsibility for the attack but suspected tribal militants have in the past targeted gas and electricity lines as well as railway tracks. They have also attacked army bases and government buildings.

Gas pipelines were blown up in Sui earlier this week which led to the suspension of supplies in Kohlu and Dera Bugti districts.

Pakistan President Pervez Musharraf has accused tribal leaders of obstructing his plans to build a sea port and road network to turn Balochistan into a major trading zone.

But the Baloch tribal leaders say their struggle is for greater provincial autonomy and an increased share of mineral
resources from the gas and oil rich province.
