MUMBAI: There is an element of uncertainty over this month’s West Indies tour of India. The West Indies Cricket Board is yet to confirm its team’s visit — for a four-match One-day International series — giving the mandarins of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), and consequently to the four hosting associations, some sleepless nights. “Yes, they have sought some time,” confirmed BCCI secretary Niranjan Shah. “There will be serious repercussion if they don’t honour the commitment.” The Windies are scheduled to play four ODIs in Nagpur (Jan 21), Cuttack (Jan 24), Chennai (Jan 27) and Baroda (Jan 31).

The perennial problem in the West Indies cricket — the players-Board row over money — is once again the reason for the the latest confusion. The West Indies Players’ Association is locked in negotiations with the WICB over fees for playing in India. The WIPA contends that the series is not part of FTP (Future Tours Programme) and is being organised at BCCI’s request. As a result of which, the WICB has held back the announcement of its squad and WICB’s Chief Finance Officer Barry Thomas, who is acting as its CEO, has asked the BCCI for a couple of days time for confirming the tour.

Tony Deyal, WICB’s head of communications told DNA that the negotiations are at an advanced stage and the row can be resolved at any time while WIPA president Dinanath Ramnarine said that he expected the matter to be settled soon. Deyal said the latest dispute arose because the players thought the India series was not part of FTP. “There are different interpretations to the FTP. I’m confident the issue will be resolved soon.” The WICB was having a luncheon meeting with the players’ representatives on Wednesday.
