MUMBAI: The Congress bagged the two assembly seats in Vidarbha where bypolls were held on December 4, with its candidates, who had defected from the Shiv Sena to join hands with Maharashtra Revenue Minister Narayan Rane, retaining the seats.

In Daryapur, Prakash Bharsakhle (45,908 votes) defeated Shiv Sena's S V Gawande (41,042 votes). In Chimur, Vijay Wadettiwar (73,832 votes) defeated the Bharatiya Janata Party's Ramesh Gajbe (54,088 votes).

Both quit the Sena and the state assembly, necessitating the bypoll. Rane quit the Sena last year and joined the Congress. He was immediately inducted into the Vilasrao Deshmukh-led Democratic Front government in the state.

Soon after the results were declared, a jubilant Rane told reporters in Nagpur, "This is a victory for Congress president Sonia Gandhi's personality and policies."

On whether the recent Khairlanji Dalit killings and farmers' suicides in Vidarbha had affected voters in these two seats, Rane said "had that been the case, we would not have won. The voters appreciate the steps taken by the state government on both the issues."

On whether more legislators would leave the Sena and join Congress, Rane said 'wait till the appropriate time'.

The bypoll results have come as a bolt from the blue for the Opposition Sena-BJP alliance. In fact, the alliance was on the verge of a formal split with both the parties staking claim on Chimur. The row was resolved with Sena chief Bal Thackeray's intervention.
