CHANDIGARH: The Punjab and Haryana high court sentenced former BJP MP Navjot Singh Sidhu on Wednesday to three years’ rigorous imprisonment and a fine of Rs1 lakh for causing the death of 65-year-old Gurnam Singh in Patiala in 1988.

But the former Test cricketer got a reprieve as the court stalled his imprisonment and gave him till January 31, 2007, to appeal to the Supreme Court.

As a relieved Sidhu walked out of court sporting a confident smile, his only refrain was that “he would constantly uphold morality in public life”. In his characteristic manner, he recited Urdu couplets reflecting his courage in the face of adversity and said his immediate task would be to sign his bail papers and move the apex court to “seek justice”.

The decision brought relief to the Shiromani Akali Dal-BJP combine, because it means Sidhu will be available to canvass for the Vidhan Sabha elections in Punjab, slated for February-end.

BJP general secretary and former Union law minister Arun Jaitley flew in specially to Chandigarh to make the final arguments in the court on Sidhu’s behalf — a firm indication that the BJP will continue to bat for its beleaguered politician.

Before going to court, Sidhu had tea with SAD president Parkash Singh Badal at the latter’s residence. Badal reportedly offered his unstinting support to Sidhu.

As a gesture of gratitude, Sidhu and Jaitley visited Badal again after the court pronounced his punishment and its postponement.
