WASHINGTON: Most Americans do not believe the United States is safer now from terrorism than before the September 11, 2001 terror strikes, a CNN television poll found.

The survey, released Wednesday, said 32 per cent of Americans believed the country was about as safe as it was then, and 25 per cent believed it was less safe.

Forty-three per cent in turn said they believed the country was safer. The telephone poll was carried out by Opinion Research Corporation August 18-20 and questioned 1,033 adults.

Most people surveyed -- 54 per cent -- said they believed it was very likely or somewhat likely an act of terror would take place in the United States in the next several weeks.

And most of those polled -- 55 per cent -- said they believed the federal government was not prepared for another terror strike on any US city or town.
