NRIs celebrate I-Day all over

Indians abroad celebrated their country’s 60th Independence Day on Tuesday by attending flag hoisting ceremonies at their diplomatic missions and participating in cultural programmes organised to mark the occasion.

KUALA LUMPUR/NEW YORK: Indians abroad celebrated their country’s 60th Independence Day on Tuesday by attending flag hoisting ceremonies at their diplomatic missions and participating in cultural programmes organised to mark the occasion.

In Kuala Lumpur, visiting Overseas Indians Minister Vayalar Ravi attended the flag hoisting ceremony at the residence of Indian High Commissioner R L Narayan. The womens’ wing of the Bharat Club, an association of expatriate Indian women, sang the national anthem and other patriotic songs.

The celebrations in the Chinese capital were attended by a large group of Indian businessmen. Independence Day was also celebrated at the Consulate General of India, Shanghai. Medical students from nearby cities also participated with marked enthusiasm. In Hong Kong, the Consulate General of India organised the function.

Nepal Prime Minister Girija Prasad Koirala congratulated Prime Minister Manmohan Singh on the occasion. Celebrations were also held in Dubai and Qatar. All over the Gulf, the English newspapers have brought out special supplements to mark the occasion.

The two-million strong Indian American community has is also celebrating India’s Independence Day with a series of programmes across the US. The weekend saw a number of fairs, festivals, parades and an Indian show in a baseball tie to mark the historic day.

A highlight of this year’s programme was a performance by a 12-piece band from the popular Indian television programme Sa Re Ga Ma Pa. Bollywood actor Bipasha Basu was participating in the events too.
