NEW DELHI: Air-India and Jet Airways on Thursday reported major delays in flights from London following heightening of security at Heathrow airport after the discovery of a terror plot to blow up planes on trans-Atlantic flights.

While a Jet Airways spokesperson said its London-Mumbai flight was delayed by over three hours, her Air-India counterpart said one flight was delayed by over six hours.

Both said the other flights were expected to be delayed.

Strict security regulations were put in place after the plot was unearthed by the British police and security agencies were the prime cause for delays. These included ban on carrying any hand baggage inside the aircraft, which led to all such baggage being carried by the passengers to be checked and transferred to the security-hold of the planes.

Air India's New York-London-Delhi service (AI-112) was delayed by six hours, while AI-101 on Mumbai-London-New York route landed at 4 pm and was expected to face a similar delay.

The state-owned carrier also has two terminator flights -- Ahmedabad-London and Delhi-Dhaka-Kolkata-London -- which were also likely to be delayed due to the security measures.

Jet Airways also has a Delhi-London flight.

The AI spokesman said the delays in the flights out of London would lead to consequential delays in other flights as well and advised passengers to contact the airport or the
Air-India call centres for flight status.

He said the airline would continue to operate flights to the UK so long as the airports were not closed down.
