ANDIPATTI: A few hundred people waiting under a scorching sun at Kandamanur in Andipatti were caught unawares by a sudden burst of summer shower. But nobody moves.

For, they are waiting for rosappoo Amma (one with the complexion of a rose), also known as J Jayalalithaa. About 10 km away, the chief minister gets into her campaign vehicle — an air-conditioned Tempo Traveller.

After 14 days of crisscrossing the state, she has come to campaign in Andipatti, which she won last time by more than 41,000 votes. Her rival, DMK candidate Seeman, is a political novice.

Everyday she begins her campaign at 4 pm and winds up by 10 pm. The women at Kandamanur break into a frenzy, as Jayalalithaa’s cavalcade screeches to a halt. Amma starts her speech: “Last time I promised you to turn Andipatti into Arasipatti (a land of princess). I have kept my promise.”

Balancing their toddlers on their hips, women flash the ‘V’ sign, which also signifies ‘two leaves,’ the election symbol of AIADMK.

Jayalalithaa’s speeches, however, lack the pun and punditry that marks the campaign of her rival and DMK chief M Karunanidhi.

Before sunset, spotlights inside the vehicle start shining.

As a bead of sweat appears on Jayalalithaa’s face, her companion Sasikala is ready with a handkerchief. As the convoy moves along  slogans hailing puratchi thalaivi (revolutionary leader) rent the air.
