KOZHIKODE: For the first time in CPI (M)’s history, a truncated politburo, armed with powers to take instant decisions, is touring Kerala.

Their brief is to pre-empt any clash between the factions of VS Achuthanandan and his bete noire and state secretary Pinarayi Vijayan.

Party sources told DNA that General Secretary Prakash Karat has been empowered to convene the meeting of the emergency politburo. The first phase of polling for the state took place on Saturday. The second and the final phase will take place on April 29 and May 3 respectively. “We do not want any skirmishes between supporters of VS and Vijayan,” a party source told DNA.

Intense factional feud erupted between “pragmatist” and “reformer” Vijayan and “dogmatic” and “Stalinist” Achuthanandan in the wake of the denial of party ticket to the latter.

The decision triggered protest with the entire pro-VS cadre filling out the streets. A truce was brought about only after the politburo backtracked and decided to field Achuthanandan. Vijayan, under scanner in a corruption case, is not contesting.

“All is still not well in the party,” Ka rat admitted.

“It is not an individual matter. It is complex issue.” A website — www.comradevs.com — launched to gather support for Achuthanandan a couple of months back is active again.

Vijayan’s endorsement of IT and his statement that the party would develop IT sector has not gone down well with VS, who has been maintaining that the Information Technology talk is meant to help real estate sharks.
