It’s the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) which should have provided sweaters to the students of municipal schools. But instead, the sweaters were provided by the Rotary Club. The reason? PMC was short of funds to purchase sweaters.

The Rotary not only took up the responsibility of providing sweaters, but also managed to provide 11,500 when the chill was more and the students needed those sweaters the most.

Earlier, the Rotary Club of Pune East had agreed to provide 8,000 sweaters to students, but realising that these sweaters will not be enough to cater to all the students, it raised more funds and distributed nearly 11,500 sweaters.

Shital Shah of Rotary Club of Pune East told dna, “We feel that it is our social responsibility. These people need a helping hand and Rotary Club decided to help the needy students who have no money to purchase new sweaters.”

It was actually the responsibility of PMC to provide free uniforms, shoes and sweaters to students studying in PMC schools. The civic administration had also set aside a budget of Rs 30 lakh for purchasing sweaters. However, due to delay in procuring these items, the cost of all the items escalated and PMC ran out of funds.

However, thanks to Rotary Club, the students got sweaters when the winter season is still going on.

Yogita Vaishampayan, secretary of Rotary Club of Pune East said, “Other Rotary clubs also helped us in raising funds and we managed to distribute some sweaters in some schools located in rural parts of the Pune district.”
