The standing committee of Pimpri Chinchwad Municipal corporation (PCMC) on Tuesday approved a proposal of purchasing 9.30 lakh garbage bins at a cost of Rs6.59 crore.

The civic body plans to distribute these bins to 4.62 lakh households in the city free of cost.

The initiative aims to encourage citizens to segregate wet and dry waste in separate garbage bins. After the arrival of garbage bins, the segregation of the wet and dry garbage is likely to become mandatory in the municipal limits. This initiative has been taken by the civic body in order to implement solid waste management rules 2010. The implementation of the rules has made it mandatory for the civic bodies, who receive funds, from central government under the Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission (JNNURM).

The civic body decided to achieve complete segregation of the solid waste at source, dispose off the inorganic waste at the garbage depot, while use the wet garbage for making organic manure through composting.

PCMC’s health executive officer RB Chavan said, “After distributing garbage bins, we are planning to create awareness among the citizens in order to encourage them to segregate the wet and dry waste. The wet garbage will taken away on daily basis while dry garbage will be sent to recycling. For creating awareness among citizens we are going to take help of the NGO’s.”

According to civic officials, creating awareness among the citizen is the  first step of the implementation of garbage disposal plan. It will be helpful for the civic body to dispose off the  segregated solid waste. In the later phases, civic body may charge every individual certain amount as garbage disposal charges.
