A 40-year-old mother of two has been arrested for murdering her husband’s girlfriend. She then hired a tempo to dispose off the corpse, but eventually dumped it at Goregaon.

The body of Shilpa Raut, 42, was found in a steel trunk near Hub Mall in Goregaon on June 12 by a garage mechanic, who informed the police.

A special team of officers from various police stations under Zone-12 was then formed to solve the case.

The investigating team found that Raut was a widow and had two children, and that she had worked for a garment manufacturing firm in Kurar. Deputy Commissioner of Police, Zone-12, Satyanarayan Chaudhary, said, “During the course of investigation, we found that Raut had worked in a firm owned by one Vijaykant Srivastava for five years. We also learnt that Raut was in an illicit relationship with him.”

Srivastava was called for questioning and he told police officials that his wife Neelam runs an imitation jewellery making unit, for which the raw material is kept at their residence. “This made us suspicious, as our officers had found small pieces of imitation jewellery from Raut’s hair and clothes,” Chaudhary said.

Police officials searched Srivastava’s flat in Kurar, where they found a blood-stained pillow and a bed sheet. When the blood group when checked, it matched with that of Raut.

Neelam was then questioned. She initially denied any involvement in the crime, but later broke down and confessed that she had killed Raut because she was upset about the affair.

Chaudhary said: “On June 11, when Neelam was alone at home, she called Raut and told her that Srivastava was seriously unwell and wanted to see her. When Raut came over, a heated argument ensued between the two women. Neelam bit Raut’s face, and then strangulated her to death.”

According to the police, Neelam tried to dispose off the body, for which she hired a small tempo. She told the driver that she wanted to take a trunk to Dadar. On the way, she asked him whether there would be police checks on the highway. The driver got suspicious and enquired about the contents of the trunk.

After some deliberation, Neelam revealed that there was a dead body in it. Scared, the driver threw both Neelam and the trunk out near the mall and fled, the police said. Neelam left the trunk at the spot, and returned home.

Police officials also questioned the driver, but concluded that he was not involved in the crime.
