Going for a vacation during the summer break proved costly for four families residing at a building in Kalachowkie, as thieves broke into their flats in the wee hours of Friday and looted valuables worth over Rs2 lakh.

The four flats are in building number 8 in Kalachowkie’s Abhyudaya Nagar. An official from the Kalachowkie police station said that the robbers locked the neighbouring flats from outside before committing the burglary.

Satish Kale, an income tax department employee whose third-floor flat was broken into, said: “Along with my wife and son, I had gone to Pune on Thursday afternoon to meet our relatives there. I received a call on my mobile phone from my neighbour on Friday around 7am. He told me that my flat had been broken into and that the burglars had stolen cash and gold ornaments.”

Kale and his family returned home after coming to know about the robbery. He noticed that his house had been ransacked. Robbers had broken open a cupboard and a showcase. They had stolen Rs15,000 in cash and some gold ornaments, Kale said.

Amit Chavan, a private company employee whose flat on the second floor was burgled, said: “I had gone to see my parents, who live in Thane, on Thursday. The burglars stole two gold chains, a ring and Rs5,000 in cash kept in a cupboard.”

The second-floor flat of Reliance employee Pramod Rasam was one more that was burgled. It is in another wing of the same building. “My family and I had gone to my sister’s house in Kandivli two days ago. The burglars stolen Rs5,500 in cash after breaking open a cupboard.”

Interestingly, nothing was found to be missing from the fourth flat that the robbers broke into. The flat, one the third floor of another wing, belongs to one Jayashri Parab. She had rented it out to a Pune-based advocate, who had gone to Pune to meet his family
on Thursday as it was a public holiday.

“We have registered a case of burglary, and a manhunt has been launched to nab the culprits,” said an official of the Kalachowkie police station.

Incidentally, seven break-ins were registered in the western suburbs on Thursday.
