As a preventive measure ahead of the upcoming zilla parishad and panchayat samiti elections, the Pune rural police have decided to extern people having two or more body offence cases against them. Police stations in the district have been instructed to make a list of suspects.

The proposal for examination is sent by the police inspector to the superintendent of police who forwards it to the sub-divisional magistrate (SDM) to take the final decision. The SDM gets an inquiry of the case done by a sub-divisional police officer.

After receiving the report, the SDM holds a hearing and takes the decision.

In the urban areas under the police commissionerate, the authority for deciding on extermination rests with the assistant police commissioner.

Last year, 72 extermination proposals were forwarded to the superintendent. The SDM sanctioned five of them.

The Shirur police had sent the highest number of proposals (10), followed by Loni Kalbhor (8) and Haveli (7).

A police inspector attached with the Pune rural police told DNA, “We have observed that most of the politicians are
using these suspects during the election period to disrupt the law and order situation in the district.”

Meanwhile, in a special drive, the local crime branch police and the local police personnel conducted 212 raids in different parts of the district, including Loni Kalbhor, Lonikand, Dehu Road and Haveli areas in the past fortnight.
