The Centre will take all necessary steps to expedite the construction of the Navi Mumbai international airport. Union civil aviation minister Ajit Singh gave this assurance to chief minister Prithviraj Chavan when they met in New Delhi on Monday.

Singh informed Chavan that the cabinet committee on infrastructure will soon meet the state-appointed high-powered committee and they will discuss the legal aspects including the bid document, contractual liabilities, infrastructural and environmental issues.

The officials said the meeting is expected to take place before August 15, while the actual bidding process may be done by March 2013. The project has already been given in-principle approval by the Union cabinet in May 2007.

Singh added that the Centre is aware of the progress made towards the project by the Maharashtra government on environmental clearance, shifting of EHV transmission lines, rehabilitation and resettlement of affected people, connectivity, land development scheme and land acquisition.

During the meeting, the two leaders also discussed the issues such as economic regulation and traffic distribution, ATN/ ANS and management of the two airports in Mumbai without operational conflict.

The project is monitored directly by the Prime Minister’s office. The proposed airport is expected to build on a  private-public participation.

But the project has been mired into controversy due to several issues related to environment, including mangroves and storm water drains in Panvel. The government is also facing difficulty in acquiring 485 hectares of private land with the villagers seeking compensation of more than Rs20 crore per hectare.
