A 32-year old doctor has been arrested by the police for allegedly duping another doctor to the tune of Rs73.48 lakh by promising him admission into Grant Medical College.

The accused claimed that he knows the dean of the hospital and could secure a seat in the MS Orthopaedics course. The police are on the lookout for two more persons, including another doctor, as it seems to be a well-organised racket.

Dr Ajaykumar Indrasen Singh, 32, a native of Ayodhya in Uttar Pradesh, was arrested by the police.

The police said the complainant, Sanjeev Yamunappa Kakareddy, 24, a resident of Belgaum district, Karnataka, had completed his MBBS studies and wanted to study the MS Ortho course in Mumbai. He sought admission in the reserved category in Grant Medical College of JJ Hospital.

“The accused persons promised Kakareddy that they will get him admitted in the course as they knew the hospital’s dean. They started exploiting Kakareddy monetarily on the pretext of processing the admission work,” said an officer from JJ Marg police station, requesting anonymity.

On July 21, this year, Kakareddy gave the accused persons Rs30 lakh near Apsara Lodge, then Rs40,000 and a cheque of Rs8,300 in the first week of September.

On October 14, Rs43 lakh was taken from the victim near Andheri railway station. “However, since a lot of money was paid and there were no signs of getting admission, the victim tried to establish contact with the accused. When there was no reply, Kakareddy realised that he had been duped and lodged a complaint at Andheri police station on October 15,” said the officer.

The case was then transferred to JJ Marg police station for further investigation. “We have arrested Singh at 2.30am on Sunday,” said another police officer.
