The Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) inaugurated two e-learning schools for underprivileged children on Wednesday. While the Rajiv Gandhi Academy of e-Learning at Shivdarshan in Sahakarnagar is an English-medium school, the Kasturba Gandhi School in Koregaon Park is a Marathi-medium one.

The Rajiv Gandhi School was conceptualised by local Congress corporator, Aba Bagul. He told DNA at the inauguration function, “At the moment, we are launching the school as an experiment. We are going to look at how it progresses for the next two years. If it is a success, I plan to start working on 10 more schools on similar lines.”

According to Komal Sonawane, a teacher at the school, computers would be used extensively to teach the students. “Students need not carry books to the school. They will be provided with sheets and will do the homework at the school itself,” she said.

Nearly 800 students have taken admission and the school will commence its academic year from June 16. The school will provide students with free uniforms and breakfast. The English-medium school is affiliated to the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) and will initially be up to Std VII.

Conceptualised by the chairperson of the PMC education board, Sangita Tiwari, the Kasturba Gandhi School has nearly 700 students. According to Tiwari, “E-learning in a Marathi-medium school will enable the underprivileged students to be on par with society.” Though the school has classes till Std VII, Tiwari said she would strive to increase them to Std X.

Divya Behl, a teacher at the school, said, “It will be interesting to have computers in every classroom. The effort will raise the enthusiasm of the students and the parents.”

The Kasturba Gandhi School is the first Marathi-medium school in the city to employ e-learning as its teaching process.
